I wanted to be a rock star. Instead I became an engineer. As a teenager, I was the singer and songwriter for my garage band Nobody’s Children. My music is still alive today and being streamed under the artist name of “Shalynn” on the Tramp record label.  In 2023, the popular British band, The Chemical Brothers, licensed one of my songs, “I Want to Know” for their 2023 album For That Beautiful Feeling.

I went to college at SMU in Dallas, studying archeology and oceanography. I learned to scuba dive in a swimming pool. I worked hard because I was paying for all of it myself.

I worked as an engineer for the Halliburton subsidiary Otis Engineering in the 70’s and 80’s. I was on the team designing above-hole Safety Valves for oil well installations all over the world. I was also the Senior Specification writer for the Technical Writing department.

I had the chance to take an early retirement package and started a whole new chapter in my life.  A close friend persuaded me to be one of the actors for a commercial his company was shooting for Southland Life Insurance Co.  That led to roles as an extra in several television series, movies and commercials. I had the most fun in shooting scenes for “Dallas” at Southfork Ranch, and the films “Logan’s Run” and “Heaven Is For Real” with Greg Kinnear.

I moved to our little piece of Heaven, Surfside Beach, 23 years ago and bought a house on Treaty Drive, which continues to be a work in progress. Luckily as a teenager,  I had worked for my uncle’s remodeling business and a friend who built houses. I tore my house apart and built it to twice the size, including new tile, laminate flooring and better insulated walls. I’ve also done interior remodeling for several friends.

I share my home with 4 roommates -- a cockatiel named Porsche, a Black Lab name Springer and two  dachshunds, Cliff and DeeDee, who are secretly in charge.

I belong to SOBA and the environmental group Better Brazoria. I worked with the Lake Jackson PD’s Citizen on Patrol program. I have also taken on the role on mentoring a fatherless teen at the request of his mother, which has been hugely rewarding for me.

God has blessed me and I try to give back to others as He commanded. At Luigis restaurant in Angleton, I funded a project to anonymously buy lunches for veterans, police officers and retirees who ate there.

I’ve had a rich and varied life.  I’ve been far luckier than I ever deserved. Now I want to help my neighbors have an even better life here.  As an engineer, I learned how to see the big picture, lay out concrete objectives, find efficient and cost effective methods, chart pathways and milestones, and put good people to work on achieving them.

I see the village Council job similarly.  The Council has to see the big picture – the ways we can change the future for the better, not just keep accepting the same old ways. We have to set important objectives and working together chart pathways to success. We have good people to handle the minutiae, but we must keep their sights on the end result – clean water, smooth streets, safe beaches and strong property values.

I want to be your voice on the Council, getting the things done that you would try to do if you were on the Council. And if elected, I’ll be having regular informal conversation sessions at local watering holes to get your advice on how to continue to make things better in Surfside. I’d appreciate your support.
